Prediabetes- who is at risk?

Individuals at risk of prediabetes include those that are:

  • Overweight
  • Over age 45
  • Have first degree relative with Type 2 diabetes mellitus  (T2DM)
  • Are physically active fewer than 3 times a week
  • Have history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM)
  • History of giving birth to a baby over 9 pounds
  • History of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
  • Hypertension
  • Hyperlipidemia (HDL<35 and/or TG >250 mg/dL)
  • HbA1C>5.7%
  • History of CVD

Diabetes

is diagnosed as glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) of >6.4

fasting plasma glucose (FPG) of >125

oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) of >199

Prediabetes

HbA1C: 5.7-6.4

FPG: 100-125

OGTT: 140-199

Normal

HbA1C: <5.7

FPG: <100

OGTT: <140
