Diabetes in pregnancy: the central role of Women’s health in family well-being

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a form of Pre Diabetes. GDM does not end following childbirth, contrary to common belief. In fact, during the initial postpartum glucose testing, almost half of the women that had GDM during pregnancy show impaired fasting glucose/glucose tolerance or even have full-blown diabetes. So GDM can lead to Diabetes. However focusing on lifestyle changes like weight loss, lowering stress, nutritious diet, exercise can all be protective against developing Diabetes. With women as the nurturer, educator, nourisher and caregiver of so many under her wing, the effects of healthy choices in her life can result in a positive impact on her family and community. Caring for mother, empowering her, and pampering her with a gift of health can ensure a better future for everyone!
